Thank you isn't enough

How can I ever thank everyone. The Ang Bayan Kong Pilipinas event was a success. How do I define success? the kids performed their best and met the technical difficulties with utmost grace and professionalism. When there was a technical difficulty, they continued with their performance as if nothing happened.  The creativity of Victoria and Belinda with John, Janelle, and Immalyn showed through out the program. The concept  was fresh, simple yet profound. They managed to interweave in the entire show the simple things we Filipinos love  from: the children playing on  the street, selling of taho and balot, fashion show and slide presentations. As they aptly put it., "Mula sa amin, para sa inyo" (From us to you).

My heart was warmed by the singing of the children. They had four Sundays of 2.5 hours each to learn all the Filipino songs: Lupang Hinirang, medley of Ang Bayan Ko/Bayan Kong Hirang, Ang Pipit and of course the story of Magellan by Yoyoy. Elyka read the poem "Kung Tuyo na ang  Luha mo aking bayan". The two dance groups: hiphop and hula dance showed the  two of the common dances  that our young usually learn and love to perform. Our young musicians performed a variety of songs from Filipino to the more contemporary English songs, an apt reprentation of our musical culture today. The latter part of the program showcased the Fashion segment and creativity of our young people in putting together the dresses and attire inspired by whatever costumes we have in our "treasure box". The costumes was a donation to PATAC by Malaya Marcelino.

My thanks to everyone who participated and volunteered. in no particular order

Ang Bayan Kong Pilipinas is the 2010 Annual Fundraising event for the Children's Rehabilitation Center in the Philippines.

This year it is directed and managed by the PATAC Youth Collective led  by Victoria Bacnis and Belinda Corpuz.. Ang Bayan Kong Pilipinas is an event by young Filipino Canadians for the young clients of the Children's Rehabilitation Center. This 2010 event is the first fundraising event ever led by the youth in its entirety with the adults in supportive role.

The young children performers who are learning Filipino songs also benefit from the process. The parents are inspired to see their children getting interested about the Philippines and their parents/grandparents country of origin. One parent said that when her child returned from practices, she started asking about the Tagalog words that she learned from the songs and skits. She asked questions about the Filipino dresses they are wearing for the fashion show. The parents were just very happy to respond and share their knowledge and stories.

PATAC hopes to continue to provide these opportunities for young Filipino Canadians here in Toronto. Your help will make it happen.
